EMPOWERING YOUTH THROUGH ACCESSIBLE HEALTH SERVICES : IMPACT OF ZIPLINE AND ELTON JOHN FOUNDATION ON HEDSO'S 'END TRIPLE THREAT' YOUTH ENGAGEMENT PROJECT

In underserved communities, young people often face significant barriers to accessing essential health services, especially around Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV prevention. For many, traditional health facilities are not just physically inaccessible but also intimidating due to issues like stigma, discrimination, and lack of privacy. Recognizing these challenges, HEDSO.org, through its ‘End Triple Threat’ Youth Engagement Project, has partnered with Zipline and the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) to bring these crucial services directly into safe, youth-friendly spaces, where young people can receive the care, they need in a supportive, familiar environment.

Breaking Down Barriers: Safe Spaces for Health Services

Zipline and EJAF have been instrumental in addressing a major barrier for young people who otherwise face stigma, discrimination, and logistical challenges at traditional healthcare facilities. By setting up service tents within football fields and other social gathering spots, young people can now access SRH and HIV prevention services in a relaxed, stigma-free atmosphere. This partnership has created a model where healthcare comes to youth, not the other way around, removing obstacles related to transportation, cost, and fear of judgment.

Privacy, Confidentiality, and Empowerment

A major aspect of this initiative is prioritizing privacy and confidentiality, two vital factors that encourage young people to seek SRH and HIV testing services. Young people often fear their information being disclosed at clinics or facilities, deterring them from seeking the help they need. Within HEDSO’s youth engagement events, however, privacy is embedded in service delivery, which fosters trust and encourages a higher uptake of SRH services. This commitment to privacy reflects in the numbers—with each event reaching up to 500 young people, who receive accurate, timely information on SRH, HIV, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Informed Decision-Making and Peer Mentorship

One of the most effective aspects of the Zipline and EJAF support is how it empowers young people to make informed health decisions. By integrating peer mentorship into events, trained young mentors engage directly with their peers, providing guidance, information, and support. This peer-led approach means young people receive information from those who understand their experiences and concerns firsthand. The results are clear: increased engagement, demand, and informed decision-making among youth attendees, which ultimately strengthens community resilience against HIV, GBV, and SRH-related challenges.

Community Collaboration and County Partnership

The impact of this program has been amplified by collaboration with the county government, which has facilitated access to approved service providers. This partnership ensures that the services offered meet regulatory standards, enhancing both the quality and sustainability of health service delivery. It also positions HEDSO’s events as a trusted “one-stop shop” for healthcare in the community, providing everything from information and guidance to access to health commodities.

Inspiring Demand and Transforming Community Engagement

Zipline and EJAF’s involvement has elevated HEDSO’s youth engagement events into pivotal community hubs for SRH and HIV prevention. The community has increasingly recognized the importance of these services, actively calling for more such events to address the demand for accessible, confidential health services. This enthusiasm reflects a shift: community members and young people alike now view HEDSO’s initiatives not only as health events but as empowering, life-enhancing experiences.

Looking Forward

With the continued support of Zipline and EJAF, HEDSO envisions further expansion of this model to more safe spaces, potentially reaching thousands of young people across rural communities. Together, we’re not just making services accessible; we’re cultivating a culture of empowerment, choice, and health awareness that has a lasting impact on the lives of youth in our community.

In summary, Zipline and EJAF’s support of HEDSO’s ‘End Triple Threat’ Youth Engagement Project has been transformative. By meeting young people where they are and addressing the unique barriers they face, this partnership is redefining youth health engagement and demonstrating the powerful role of accessible, stigma-free health services. This initiative is more than a project; it’s a movement for healthier, more empowered youth.
