ANNA'S STORY DRIVES HEDSO'S VISION FOR CHANGE
Kabibi Village, Kisumu West, Kenya, 27 November 2024—In the quiet village of Kabibi, Anna (not her real name for privacy), a 17-year-old mother, sits outside her modest home, watching her toddler play. Her gaze occasionally shifts to a small patch of land nearby—a symbol of the hope she is just beginning to rediscover. “I depend entirely on my husband,” Anna shares quietly. “When money is tight, arguments always escalate, and I feel powerless to change anything. My child’s needs are often unmet.”
Anna’s story, though deeply personal, mirrors the struggles of countless teenage mothers in marginalized rural areas like Kabibi. It was her courage in sharing her experiences that inspired the Health And Economic Development Strategy Organization (HEDSO) to launch a transformative initiative: the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.
When a HEDSO peer mentor, JUDITH ATIENO, met Anna during a community outreach, she was moved by her resilience and determination to provide a better life for her child. Anna’s challenges highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions to empower young mothers like her, reduce their vulnerability, and offer them a path to independence.
“I saw how limited access to income and food made these young women more susceptible to violence and exploitation,” says JUDITH ATIENO, a HEDSO peer mentor. “Anna’s story pushed us to act. We knew we needed to create something practical and impactful.”
The result was the establishment of a demonstration farm at HEDSO’s satellite office, where adolescent girls and young mothers can learn climate-smart agricultural techniques. The program is designed to provide participants with tools to grow their own food, earn a sustainable income, and build resilience against the challenges they face.
A New Chapter for Anna and Others
Anna will be the first participant in the training program, a fitting testament to her role in inspiring this initiative. The demo farm will teach her and other girls practices such as conical gardening, crop rotation, and agroforestry, enabling high-yield farming even on small plots of land. These techniques are not only environmentally friendly but also highly productive, ensuring food security and income for the participants.
“For the first time, I feel hopeful,” Anna says. “I’ll learn skills that will help me feed my child and earn money without relying entirely on my husband. This is my chance to break free from the cycle of dependence.”
HEDSO’s program is not just about farming; it is about empowerment. The goal is to equip young women like Anna with the skills and confidence to create a better future for themselves and their families. In doing so, the initiative addresses systemic issues of poverty, food insecurity, and gender inequality in Kabibi and beyond.
Anna’s training is just the beginning. HEDSO plans to expand the program, inviting more young mothers and adolescent girls to join. The demonstration farm serves as a hub for education, mentorship, and community building. With Anna leading the way, the program aims to train 500 teenage mothers across all the sub-counties in Kisumu County by May 2025.
“Our vision is to create a ripple effect,” says TYSON OKELLO, a HEDSO program coordinator. “When we empower one woman, we empower a family and, eventually, an entire community. Anna’s courage has set the stage for something much bigger.” Anna’s story reminds us of the transformative power of community-driven initiatives. By supporting the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program, donors and partners can help HEDSO reach more young mothers and girls, providing them with the tools to break free from cycles of poverty and dependence. Together, we can plant the seeds of change in Kabibi and beyond. Support Anna and others like her as they build a brighter, more sustainable future.
