MENSTRUAL HYGIENE AS A PRIORITY , NOT A CHOICE
WHO emphasizes that menstruation should be visualized in a physical, psychological and social dimension that needs to be addressed in the perspective of a life course. Menstrual health means that women and girls and other people who menstruate have access to water, sanitation and disposal facilities, competent and empathetic care when needed to live, study and work in environments in which menstruation is viewed as positively and healthy.
As HEDSO we recognize that menstrual health management is an important aspect in eliminating inequalities and promoting vulnerable girls ' education.
Through pad distribution in school, and peer education on Menstrual Hygiene Management, HEDSO advocates for a transformed society where girls have access to improved Menstrual Hygiene, where safe hygienic behavior during menstruation is the norm and where proper and sound menstrual waste management is highly practiced.
We derive our guiding principles from the Kenya Menstrual Hygiene Management Strategy 2019-2030 which is regarding menstruation as a human right, WASH as a condition for MHM, equity, social inclusion, education and promoting of sustainable, appropriate and affordable menstrual products.
We integrate our program with the four components from the Menstrual Hygiene Management Framework which are; Access to hardware, hygiene promotion, access to affordable menstrual hygiene management products and an enabling environment to achieve an ideal delivery of Menstrual Hygiene Management services.
Hedso promotes menstrual hygiene management in schools to promote the integration of sexual and reproductive health education with the provision of sanitary infrastructure that offers privacy, water, soap for hand washing.
This helps boost the confidence of Adolescent girls and reduces school drop out rates. Completion of school increases girls earnings and formal employment.
We commit to building a society that increases confidence, knowledge and skills and improve access to materials and facilities for adolescent girls and young women to manage their menstruation safely and in decent ways.
